He passes through on the strength of his will and his character accomplishments and because the group conscious aspect of the soul is active in him as in his brother seeking affiliation with the Great White Lodge. The love aspect is, however, lacking in the black magician. Forget not that all is energy and there is nothing else. The energy which is an aspect of the soul and which we call magnetic attraction the group-building quality he shares with the spiritual aspirant. He is essentially group conscious, and though his motives are separative, his methods are those of the group, and these he can get only from the soul.

You see again another reason why the first and second initiations are not regarded by the Lodge of Masters as major initiations. To this type of energy the black magician is not responsive. It is at this point that the two ways — of darkness and of light — become widely divergent. Until the third initiation is taken, glamor may condition the attitude of those seeking to understand the life of a man upon the Path, and they may mistake the spurious for the real.

The black magician leads a disciplined life, analogous to that of the spiritual aspirant; he practices purity for his own safeguarding and not in order that he may become a channel for the energy of light; he works with power the power of magnetic attraction with and in groups, but he does this for his own selfish ends and for the fulfillment of his own ambitious purposes. But at the third initiation there comes to the true spiritual initiate the revelation which is the reward of perseverance and purity rightly motivated — the revelation of the divine purpose, as the soul records it in terms of the hierarchical plan, though not yet in terms of the Monad.

Our perception, then, is a circular, flowing motion that knows no points. It is not, in actuality, a spiral form, because it has no mundane direction—nor a sense of higher or lower. Nor, at the same time, is it self-contained, because it is truly infinite as viewed from the more complete perspective of omnipotency. The common initiation, as was considered previously, basically accomplishes two things.

First, it represents—no, it is a complete path or current solidified into a method.

It has all the elements in their completeness contained in a system that is in and of itself omnipotent. In this type of initiation, the tradition and lineage of this system is passed from one initiate to another. Please understand that the awareness of expanded consciousness, or mystical illumination, that the common initiation represents and serves, is not necessarily understood consciously by the initiate receiving the initiation. Nor is it necessarily consciously understood by the initiator, the one who initiates. It is important to realise that an intangible substance is passed from one to another by process of the common initiation since each initiate, regardless of understanding, has taken a vow to become a vehicle of Light and to truly serve the path.

It is not necessary for initiate or initiator to understand the essence that is passed from one to another, as long as purity of motive and sincerity is evident. This is simply because a person does not bestow an initiation upon another person. The initiator serves the initiation, and it is the initiate who receives what is served by another and agrees to serve perpetually in the same fashion—taking on the full responsibility to learn what has occurred.

Secondly, the common initiation inspires and awakens the dormant rare initiation within each individual. It is important to note at this point that a rare initiation is not higher, lower, or better than a common initiation, or vice versa. For a path to be followed, there is an immediate interrelationship between the two forms of initiation that necessitates their inseparability.

How to Know Higher Worlds: A Modern Path of Initiation

This point will be illustrated shortly. The rare initiation can also be referred to as the true initiation, although the latter term can be misleading. Simply defined, the rare initiation occurs when an initiate receives initiation directly through a spiritual osmosis and not from a human initiator. In other words, there is a complete merging of the nature of the initiate with the spiritual current. The initiate realises that he or she does not merely enter into a current and travel from point to point, as mentioned previously, but rather the nature of the initiate is to become identical with the flow or the current.

The rare initiation implies that the recipient has received a realisation of mystical illumination. However, there is much more to this than meets the eye. Anyone can receive mystical illumination, and one does not have to be on a path to do so. If such is the case, it must be realised that the nature of the illumination could possibly be meaningless or that it is wasted, in a sense, on someone who does not realise its meaning and put it into action.

Mystical illumination in and of itself is common. What is extremely rare is for a person to actually realise and to participate in the experience, thereby fully appreciating its value. All beings have the potential for an awakening inherent within them.

Therefore, mystical illumination becomes a simple realisation. The importance of a mystical experience is that it is noetic. One knows without doubt that something is true. My son starts at a Waldorf school this fall, so I thought I'd read some Steiner.

In a nutshell, he claims to be able to teach clairvoyance.


Steiner himself pre-empts our doubts about his work at the outset by explaining that it is scientific knowledge for someone who has developed the same abilities as he has, but to those who have not developed those abilities they must take his claims somewhat on faith. So this rhetorical double-bind leaves us relying on feelings and interactions to assess his work. Not a good start. His path to cognitive verification involves feeling and making time for reflective veneration, devotion, wonder and awe. He says that recollection, quiet time, and tranquility - essentially the Buddhist idea of shamatha - helps develop supersensible cognition.

He says we should develop spiritual ears and eyes - whatever that means - in order to verify his findings. Chapter two concerns developing these organs of cognition in three stages. Many warnings about morality, silence, modesty and basic decency hedge these suggestions. He talks about strength of character fire , reliance on some kind of astral writing based on the grammar of the previous two stages water , and some kind of initiatory commitment air.

Chapter three gives advice on developing supersensible cognition successfully: patience, gentleness, stability, understanding, observation. Chapter four concerns itself with high quality morality as a help in this cognition. Chapter five gives detailed advice for using thoughts and feelings to develop the chakras. It is long, detailed, technical, confusing, and a bit overwhelming.

This provides the basis for Chapter 8 where Steiner announces that thinking willing and feeling will become separate persons! Chapter 9 presents an unusually poetic way of dealing with first personal then collective karma. It seems kind of oddball. In the appendix he says that the proposed course of action occurs all in thought and the everyday self goes about its business while the inner life flourishes along quite different lines.

He justifies the long chapter five on the chakra by saying that knowing these chakras enables one to be aware of their astral body without which one would be a baby. What to say about all this? I think the main thing is to judge his work on a thorough test or else ignore his ideas. So clearly he is suggesting an inner course of reflection and contemplation aimed at verifying non-physical realities. Steiner wrote How to Know Higher Worlds in , a time when society was hungry for knowledge and philosophers and scholars were actively exploring the science of the spirit. Steiner not only reminds us to go inward as often as possible, but he also shows us how. He acts as the spiritual guide that many students seek and leads each of us a couple of steps further outside the material realm until we can transverse and explore the spirit world on our own. After I finished this book, I reflected on the lessons for quite some time, truly amazed that such illuminated teachings are still relatively unknown if not written off as New Age rubbish in modern society.

But he writes outwardly what I've taken to be the course of my life , even before I've read his work. So in that respect this book, my first of his, has been rather mind-blowing. I can't speak for other people , look for me it's almost as if I received the message that I've been on track. I can't speak highly enough of this book. There is so much Truth in it that as I come across new ideas he has written here , I'm approaching it as more truth pointing in the right direction. Your experiences may differ but Wow.

He describes the throat and heart Chakras as a model for this development. Interesting stuff! He then discusses the regulation of the solar plexus and sacral chakras, which is a bit more vague due to their individual nature. Heavy reading too. He then discusses the development of an energetic body called the Etheric, and describes a complex process of moving that energy body from the head to the heart and then opening the aura like a membrane to the flow of energy.
